Shared Destiny
Béla Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 3
Ernst von Dohnányi: Symphony No. 1 in D minor
While Bartók and Dohnányi’s artistic creeds differed significantly, their fates were quite similar: the storms of history first isolated them and then drove them to America.
Béla Bartók’s Hungarian Peasant Songs collected in a bouquet the most cherished pieces of his folk music collection endeavour, which he re-arranged not only for the piano but later also for the symphony orchestra. His Piano Concerto No. 3 was already composed in the US when he was severely sick and dedicated the work to his wife as if he had summed up his legacy in this composition. Dohnányi spent his entire life close to German music. His Symphony No. 1, completed at the turn of the 20th century, is basically the very essence of Romanticism.
