Although György Kurtág is an avant-garde musician, he is a marvellous expert and an excellent interpreter of the great classics. He is, therefore, worthy of celebrating his 100th birthday in the company of the great classical composer, Beethoven.

The night opens with Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 2, op. 27, performed by Dénes Várjon. It is followed by another composition with the same number but from Kurtág's oeuvre. The piece, written for cello, piano, and symphony orchestra, simultaneously reflects on the Baroque traditions, exhausts the possibilities of the instruments, and flashes the feats of Kurtág's time. The concert closes with one of Beethoven's most impactful symphonies, Eroica, with a heroic message. Celebrate with us!
