Easter Concert
Joseph Haydn: Symphony No. 92 "Oxford"
Johann Sebastian Bach: Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen (BWV 11)
"Heaven laughs, Earth exults!"—so begins Bach's Cantata No. 31, written for the Easter he celebrated in Weimar. Easter is a more crucial holiday for Christianity than Christmas, so Bach's Easter music also puts joy in the spotlight.
At the Easter concert, we can hear a cantata for Easter and a cantata for Ascension, both written by Bach. In both, we can see musical versions of the most majestic manifestations of Baroque architecture. The Haydn symphony, performed between the two Bach cantatas, is not sacred music, but it was completed when Haydn left Eszterháza after a long wait and started the life of world-famous composers on his way to England. Therefore, the optimism of resurrection is present in the music set for the concert programme.
