Are You A Puppet?
Henryk Wieniawski: Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor, Op. 22
Béla Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin - Suite
Richard Strauss: Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks
We might tend to think that puppets are toys. Just like roles are games, we add them. And if you look at it more closely, we play roles also in the most severe things in life. But who's playing with us?
Life is the playwright, the directors are circumstances, and we often feel that we are not only forced to play our role but also puppets in the "hands" of the actual situation. Is it possible that the play of puppets and roles is sometimes no farce but a serious drama? Is the puppet responsible for becoming a puppet? Is the puppeteer guilty of playing with the puppet? Is it okay for man to play? Is it a problem if the game gets serious? And are we wrong to allow ourselves to act as puppets? These are the themes of the featured compositions this evening.
