Bridgemen
Radu Paladi: Piano Concerto (1989)
George Enescu: Symphony No. 1 (revised version)
George Enescu means the same to the Romanian people as Bartók means to us Hungarians. They were born in the same year, they both considered the reform of national music the purpose of their lives, they were greatly inspired by traditional folk music, and they both died far from their home countries. Still, their music is utterly different. Nonetheless, they resemble in creating a bridge between the music of their national and universal music. In fact, Bartók worked hard to research and preserve Romanian traditional folk music as well; thus, he represented a bridge also between the Hungarian and the Romanian cultures. Only few Hungarians are evoked with so much respect and affection as Bartók in Romania. Between Bartók and Enescu, we can hear the Piano Concerto by the Romanian composer Radu Paladi, written in 1989, the year which meant a turning point in the histories of both Hungary and Romania.
