Pécs Shake in Vienna
Musik der Meister Series
Richard Strauss: Oboe Concerto
Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 3
The Pannon Philharmonic returns to Vienna with the pieces of two masters who had a long-established and firm connection with the city: Richard Strauss and Anton Bruckner. Although both of them wrote numerous pieces linked to Vienna, these two compositions still stand out. Richard Strauss’ Oboe Concerto No. 2 was written in Garmisch-Partenkirchen after World War II, prompted by the idea of an american oboist. Still, in its tone and optimism, the impact of the classical masters of Vienna – particularly that of Mozart – can be detected in it in several aspects. Anton Bruckner dedicated his monumental symphony No. 3 to Richard Wagner, and thus it focuses on Wagner, nonetheless, in Vienna’s intellectual atmosphere. The two works showcase plainly what Vienna represents in the world of music: the meeting point of great cultures and great masters, the steady stage of music history, a lighthouse in german musical culture and an absolute cornerstone in the universal history of music. The evening start with Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte Ouverure.
What are you looking forward to the most?
I can now commence my 12th season as the chief conductor of the Pannon Philharmonic, which means a great joy to me. One of the peaks of our collaboration is our series in the Musikverein in Vienna; I'm looking forward to its third concert, perhaps the most. We'll be playing Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 3 and Richard Strauss' Oboe Concerto, featuring Clara Dent-Bogányi as the oboe soloist.
Tibor Boganyi is not only regarded as one of the most prominent Hungarian but also Finnish conductors. He used to work as the chief conductor of the now 28-year-old Turku Philharmonic. Then in the following years, he was connected to several renowned international and Hungarian ensembles. Since 2021, after Gilbert Varga left his position, Tibor Bogányi has again been the sole chief conductor of the Pannon Philharmonic.
The 2022/2023 season of the Pannon Philharmonic was given the title ’Refrain’. What does this name refer to?
The term 'refrain' stands for recurrence, repeating patterns, the eternal cycle of life and its renewal. We will return to Vienna for the third time and then to Budapest, as we have done so many times before. In the season's repertoire – as a refrain – several greatly influential compositions return: We’ll perform Liszt’s Dante Symphony, Bruckner’s Symphony No. 3 and Ernest Chausson’s Symphony in B-flat minor, which we have played in the previous years already.
