Jacques Ibert: Flute Concerto
Antonín Dvořák: Symphony No.8 in G major, Op. 88
How is it possible to pass on the traditionally established genres of the symphony and the concerto in a novel, yet conservative and organically progressive style? This question might have been on the composers' minds when they were writing the works featured at this concert. Even though Weinberg's Sinfonietta, Ibert’s Flute Concerto and Dvořák’s Symphony No 8 are several decades and thousands of miles apart, this stream of thought does connect them. We recommend this programme to all those who enjoy ambitious melodies, capturing instrumental solo parts, intimate slow movements, capricious finales and vivid, dancey tunes, and within it all, would be happy to hear something novel and less familiar. Nevertheless, Dvořák’s Symphony No 8 is increasingly popular nowadays. For many years, the 'New World' Symphony (No. 9) dominated the Dvořák-landscape, but recently, Symphony No. 8 is increasingly taking over its popularity. It is no coincidence, as it is just as versatile and lovable as its famous fellow-symphony.
