The mentoring programme of the Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation prepares young composers, conductors and soloists for their debut before an open audience in Pécs. We tend to regard the avant-garde of the 20th century as modern music, but if we think about it a bit more deeply, we can realise that an entire century separates us from these works; some of them could already be considered a "classical" piece. Indeed, at this concert,  the "classical" layer will be represented by the masters of the turn of the 20th century, and the world premiere of the young Sicilian composer's Cello Concerto will come as the "novelty" of the evening. Nonetheless, even the 20th-century works can act as novelties, as they are relatively seldom performed in the world's concert halls. According to its sub-title, Leó Weiner's Carnival-overture is a humoresque for orchestra, which observes the conventions of the genre, yet it also carries some Hungarian folk character. Leonardo Marino's Cello Concerto is a complete surprise as yet, while the Polish Szymanowski's grandiose Symphony No. 2 simultaneously shows Wagner's influence and the winds of the 20th century. This symphony is the most impactful composition of Szymanowski's first creative phase, establishing his international fame. It presents the master as a young and gifted composer who is deeply familiar with his great predecessors, the musical mainstream of his day but is on the quest for his own unique tone.
