National Holiday Concert - Canceled!
Co-production partner: Filharmónia Magyarország Nonprofit Kft
Franz Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major
László Dubrovay: Hungarian Symphony
Ernst von Dohnányi: Ruralia Hungarica, Op. 32/b
Traditionally, the orchestra pays tribute to the revolutionaries and fighters for national self-esteem on 15 March with compositions by Hungarian masters. Even though this year most commemoration events get sadly cancelled, music-lovers do not need to give up on this pleasure, as the concert will take place and streamed live online. The event is opened by Ferenc Erkel’s Festive Overture, which the elderly master originally dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Pest Hungarian Theatre. It did not only sum up the entire oeuvre of the composer but has ever since served as the musical accompaniment for countless national holiday celebrations. It will be followed by Liszt’s deservedly famous lyrical Piano Concerto in A major, which - compared to the nationally-inspired work before it - is considered an international hit. After the two popular pieces, you can enjoy a real rarity: the Hungarian Symphony by the Pécs-based composer, László Dubrovay, which presents another episode of Hungarian music history. In conclusion, you are invited to listen to a composition which set off from Pécs to conquer the world: it was namely in Pécs in 1924, when Ernő Dohnányi first performed his piano cycle, Ruralia Hungarica. He later re-arranged five of its movements for the symphony orchestra as well. The audience both in Hungary and abroad received the work with great enthusiasm. Although Dohnányi would normally work less with folk musical traditions, this piece of his is a clear manifestation of his profound patriotism.
A co-production by the Filharmónia Magyarország Nonprofit Kft and the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra.
Live Stream supported by the Ministry of Human Resources (EMMI).
