The Catholic church remembers Christ’s suffering according to the words of evangelists. On the days preceding Easter, the Scripture recounts Jesus’s last days on Earth, from his betrayal to his crucifixion. There is evidence that these passages were read as far back as the early centuries of the Catholic church. Later these were increasingly performed in a lyrical, dramatized form. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the 1742 performance according to John the Evangelist’s narrative, then repeatedly reworked St. John’s Passion. The composition highlights the human features of the son of God, striving to depict them as realistically as possible. The work is thus centered around a passionate, fiery, and intense characterisation of Jesus. Bach uses the same impassioned style for the choir themes depicting the crowd’s temper. In this otherwise religious opera, there is no lyrical scene or philosophising: an impactful and potent drama fueled by impassioned emotions plays out in front of the audience.
